Visitor Visa
Visit Canada for Family, Friends, Business, or Special Events
If you are not a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident, you may need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)—commonly referred to as a Visitor Visa—to travel to Canada for a temporary purpose.
A Temporary Resident Visa is generally used for a temporary stay in Canada, often for less than six months, although the final length of stay is determined by the officer at the port of entry.
Who Should Apply for a Visitor Visa?
A Temporary Resident Visa may be appropriate if you plan to:
- Visit your spouse, parents, children, relatives, or friends in Canada.
- Attend a family event such as a wedding, graduation, or celebration.
- Explore business or employment opportunities in Canada.
- Attend business meetings, conferences, seminars, workshops, or professional events.
- Attend short-term training programs or other temporary activities permitted under Canadian immigration laws.
Do I Need an Invitation Letter?
In many cases, yes.
If you are visiting family members or friends in Canada, a well-prepared Letter of Invitation from your host can significantly strengthen your application.
If you are travelling for business purposes, you should normally have an invitation from the Canadian company, organization, employer, business contact, event organizer, or professional institution you intend to visit.
Although an invitation letter is not legally required in every Visitor Visa application, providing clear evidence that someone, a company, an organization, or a legitimate event is expecting your arrival in Canada can help demonstrate the purpose of your visit.
