Child Born Outside Canada? You May Be Able to Apply for Canadian Citizenship and Passport from Abroad
Many Canadian citizens live, work, or study abroad and start their families there. One of the most common questions we receive is whether a child born outside Canada can obtain Canadian citizenship and a Canadian passport without first travelling to Canada.
In many cases, the answer is yes.
If at least one parent was a Canadian citizen at the time of the child’s birth, the child may be eligible for Canadian citizenship by descent. Before obtaining a Canadian passport, the child will generally need to receive a Certificate of Canadian Citizenship as proof of citizenship.
The process typically involves submitting an application for a Citizenship Certificate, providing supporting identity and civil status documents, and demonstrating the Canadian citizenship status of the parent. Once citizenship is confirmed, an application for a Canadian passport can be submitted through the appropriate Canadian embassy, consulate, or passport authority.
Although the process may appear straightforward, many applications experience delays due to incomplete documentation, translation requirements, proof of parentage issues, or questions regarding citizenship eligibility.
